An Introduction to Shinobazu Pond and Hari-chan I was an exhibition and series of related programs exploring a controversy surrounding the proposed reclamation of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno in 1949, and a giant papier-mâché duck created by students of the Tokyo Fine Arts School as a symbol of the campaign opposing the plan.
I refer to this papier-mâché duck as “Hari-chan.” Through archival research and fieldwork around Shinobazu Pond, I reconstructed the duck at approximately full scale. In my 2026 graduation project, Fate, Like a Duck, Produces Light, the reconstructed figure was presented alongside a 1:200-scale model of Shinobazu Pond, mirrored surfaces evoking water, illuminated plant-like objects, and footage filmed at West Lake in Hangzhou, China. Together, these elements reconfigured the histories and landscapes surrounding Shinobazu Pond.
Rather than presenting the graduation project solely through documentation and archival materials, this exhibition also included drawings made directly on the gallery walls, talk events, a silkscreen workshop, and a walking fieldwork session from Yanaka to Shinobazu Pond. These activities brought together people with different areas of expertise and personal experience to reconsider a past event from the perspective of the present-day site.
The phrase “An Introduction” does not suggest a complete or definitive account. Instead, it describes an open setting in which documents, testimonies, landscapes, conversations, and embodied experiences could be brought together and reconsidered collectively. The project connected an event that took place nearly eighty years ago around a pond that was at risk of disappearing with contemporary questions concerning public space, urban memory, and people’s attachment to place.
