Scheduled Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

This charming duck is a life-size reproduction of a papier-mâché figure created in 1949 as a “symbol of opposition to the landfill” during the Shinobazu Pond reclamation protest movement, through the collaboration of students from Tokyo University of the Arts and staff members from multiple cultural institutions, including Ueno Zoo and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The light source of the plants extending from the pond incorporates video footage actually filmed at West Lake in Hangzhou, China, a site with deep connections to Shinobazu Pond. The materials, placement, and title were selected by the artist based on inspiration drawn from historical facts and literary works, presenting a vision of Shinobazu Pond that rises across time.
This work began with the artist’s encounter with the histories and voices that might otherwise have been lost, and through the artist’s continued bodily engagement with Shinobazu Pond, has grown out of a sense of respect and affection for the people and events connected to this place.

可愛らしいこのアヒルは、1949年に起きた不忍池埋立反対運動の際、「埋立反対のシンボル」として、藝大生や上野動物園、東京都美術館など複数の文化施設職員たちが結託して制作した張子の実寸再現である。また、池からのびる植物の光源には、不忍池と深いゆかりを持つ中国・杭州の西湖で実際に撮影した映像が用いられている。素材や配置、タイトルは、史実と文学作品から得た着想にもとづき作家が選択したものであり、時代を超えて立ち上がる一つの不忍池の風景を示している。
失われていたかもしれないこの場所の歴史と声を知り、いまも不忍池に出会い続けている自身の身体を通して、その人々や出来事への尊敬と愛着からこの制作は始まった。
