2024 / participatory walk
This work developed from a series of experiences I had while walking in Toride.
One of them was the discovery of a signpost made by the “Toride Slope Enthusiasts” near the Toride campus. Drawn to their long-running practice of naming otherwise unnamed slopes and placing signposts along them, I visited members of the group and listened to their stories. From there, the work gradually expanded to include memories from other places and experiences, such as my time in Uganda and an occasion when I dug up the roots of a tree, layering these personal memories onto the landscape of Toride.
Participants walk through the campus with me while listening to stories connected to different places along the route. Along the way, we pick up branches and other found objects and use them to make temporary “signposts.” We follow overlooked places and rarely used paths, moving through the Toride campus as if caressing the surface of the land.
My storytelling is neither quite a guided tour, nor theater, nor simply conversation. At one point, we stop and drink tea together. Toward the end, “Country Roads” begins to play, without it being entirely clear whether this is accidental or staged. Eventually, we return to where we began, and the walk comes to an end.
Through walking, memories of distant places begin to overlap with the landscape in front of us, while planned events become entangled with accidental encounters. Caressing the Land is an attempt to share the landscapes I have encountered through walking by walking through them again with others.

この作品は、私が取手を歩くなかで経験したいくつもの出来事から生まれた。その一つが、取手キャンパス周辺を歩いていたときに見つけた「取手の坂道愛好会」の道標だった。名もない坂に名前をつけ、道標を立ててきた彼らの活動に惹かれ、私はメンバーを訪ね、話を聞いた。そこから、ウガンダで人々と過ごした記憶や、木の根を掘り起こした経験など、異なる場所での個人的な記憶を、取手の風景と重ねながら歩く作品へと展開していった。
鑑賞者は私とともにキャンパスを歩き、場所に結びついた話を聞く。途中で枝や落ちているものを拾い、それらを使って一時的な「道標」を立てる。普段は通り過ぎてしまう場所や、ほとんど人の通らない道を辿りながら、取手キャンパスの大地を撫でるように歩いていく。
私の語りは、ガイドとも演劇とも、単なる会話とも言い切れない。 途中でみんなでお茶を飲み、最後には、偶然なのかあらかじめ仕組まれていたのかわからないまま「カントリーロード」が聞こえてくる。そして再び出発した場所へ戻り、歩行は終わる。
歩くことによって、離れた場所の記憶や目の前の風景、意図した出来事と偶然の出来事が重なっていく。
