In 1949, a papier-mâché duck appeared as part of a movement opposing plans to reclaim Shinobazu Pond. This book brings together research and artistic practices surrounding the duck, tracing historical records of the protest and the life-size reconstruction made in 2026. The reconstructed duck was given the nickname “Hari-chan,” derived from hariko, the Japanese term for papier-mâché figures.
The book presents, from opposite ends, the history of Shinobazu Pond in 1949 and records of research, production, exhibitions, and lecture performances carried out between 2025 and 2026. Designed to be read from either side, it moves back and forth between these two periods, tracing Shinobazu Pond as a place and the activities of the people who have been involved with it through the figure of a single papier-mâché duck.
